Matthew Herzog / January 30th, 2017
After a lo-fi recording of a basement rehearsal by the band Falsa, I sat down with two members of the four man troup, Tom Deis and Umer Piracha, to discuss their modern take on 14th century Sufi music. Recorded prior to President Trump’s Friday, January 27th, 2017 executive decision on Muslim immigration - when banning Muslims loomed as a hypothetical threat - Tom, Umer, and I talked through Falsa’s connection to our current social, cultural, and political climate. Keeping it real and keeping it light, a lot was said about Place and Identity, and the age old question, ‘How do you describe the sensation of Rhythm?’
*Uni Ika Ai is Tom Deis' additional music project. They released a full-length album near the end of 2016. To check out their music and see what’s coming next for the Brooklyn-based group, hit up their website here.
